DIY Wood Working Projects

By: Mark Ames

Wood working projects are grouped by project type. There are many sources of wood working plans for the homeowner. With a good set of plans someone without a lot of wood working experience can achieve excellent results. DIY Sheds are one popular project just about anyone can complete. DIY shed plans are very popular these days.

You need to consider several things before beginning any wood working project. The first and most important is picking a good plan/blueprint. A good plan will lay everything out in detail leaving nothing to the imagination.

The second thing to consider is the complexity of the plan. Make sure you aren’t starting out with a plan that is so complicated that even an experienced wood worker would have a difficult time.

Make sure you can follow the plan before starting. Make sure you have all the required tools. If not, are you willing to spend the extra money necessary to have the required tools? Make sure you are willing to commit the time necessary to complete the project.

Wood working projects can also be grouped based on quality. Ideally, they should be well laid out and contain sufficient detail. They should have good pictures and illustrations. The more pictures and illustrations the better! You’ve heard the old saying - a picture is worth a thousand words. Well, this is especially true when it comes to DIY blueprints . All the explaining in the world can’t provide as much insight and understanding as a good picture or plan.

Most word working plans even come with what is called a cut list. This is a list of all the lumber needed for the project with instructions on how to cut every board. Cutting the lumber in advance of assembly makes the job much easier. Plus you can paint everything before its put together. It is much easier to paint a piece of lumber when it is laying on a sawhorse than it is after everything is assembled and you need a ladder to reach the boards 10’ off the ground.

There are many websites on the internet which provide online wood working plans. You can even find some free plans on the internet. Typically, internet plans allow you to download the plans to your computer where you can save them and print them for your own use.

If you are new to wood working you will probably want to start with something small and not too complicated. Then, as your skill increases, you can take on larger more complex projects. Soon you’ll be building items that will make you neighbors envious.

Just remember, the most important item in any wood working project is a good detailed, well illustrated plan!
